Former Dundalk & Monaghan defender Stefan McKevitt signs as BTS columnist

Well, where do I start? Kieran Burke had approached me a couple of weeks ago and threw the idea of me writing a weekly column for Between the Stripes. Having that mutual connection through Head In The Game we would keep in regular contact. At first, I thought he was winding me up and then I thought he was crazy but the more I thought about it the more I thought about getting out of my comfort zone and doing something totally different and challenging!

My first challenge was thinking about what to write about.… I felt I didn’t want to restrict myself to talking just about Dundalk and I have a strong feeling it won’t be just as headline-grabbing as last season! I waffle enough on The Town End Podcast and somebody would probably tell me to “tip on”. Anyway, Donal Hanks has that market sewn up, and any feeble attempt with pale in comparison.

So, what else? Maybe my own (very very) short LOI career. It could turn sour very quickly when I annoy everyone about my lack of playing opportunities, hard-luck stories, or eventually walking away from semi-pro football to concentrate on putting my young family first. Then again, I’m not so sure the column would last too long, ha!

Possibly I could ramble about major Footballing talking points from the previous week. Plenty of topics and news stories to talk about but maybe I would find myself speaking about stories I had no connection or interest in.

What about something I have a real passion for? That being Head In The Game. We have done so much in such a short space of time. There is lots of work that goes on behind the scenes which nobody realises but aside from family life, it has been the most rewarding experience personally. I would have plenty of material to work with and it would be quite interesting chatting about the plans we have for 2022!

After sitting with it for a while and discussing with Sharon, my saint of a Wife who puts up with my constant nonsense, I finally came to the conclusion that I should make it a combination of all mentioned above. There is a wide variety of content so I definitely won’t be stuck for something to write about. I’m Looking forward to whatever it brings and for the 3 or 4 people who will read it, enjoy. Over and out!

Stef.
